The days are changing for freelancers

The days are changing for freelancers

Millions of young people in freelancing, how much income

  1. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Junaid Ahmed said that there are now six and a half lakh freelancers in the country. Their total annual income is about 1 billion dollars or 10,600 crore taka (106 taka per dollar). Since 2014, 53,000 youth have been trained in various IT subjects through the Learning and Earning project.

  • However, Chairman of Bangladesh Freelancer Development Society Tanjiba Rahman said that the account of six and a half lakhs is held by Upwork Marketplace. 153 marketplaces are operated from Bangladesh. If you calculate them, this number is about 10 lakh. 55 percent of them are between 20 and 35 years old. However, the participation of women in freelancing is still low.

  1. Tanjiba Rahman says India is at the top in terms of freelancing. After that, the location of Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh ranks seventh in terms of income. The United States is at the top.

Tanjiba Rahman said that smart cards have been given to about 30 thousand freelancers since 2020. These card holders will get bank loan facility. 4 percent incentive is also being given if the income is brought from outside through the bank.

How to learn

  1. Touhidur Rahman, a successful and experienced freelancer from Dhaka , told Prothom Alo , first of all, the freelancing issue should be understood. Then one should be proficient in information technology. Better to get a job first or work with a successful freelancer. By referring to these works, a good portfolio should be created in the marketplace. The work should be done on time.

Tanjiba Rahman said that although the job market is small due to the corona epidemic, the field of freelancing work has increased. Now digital marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), graphic design and logo creation, web development jobs are in high demand. Apart from this, content writing (basically product or service description or promotional writing), modern photography, human resource management and accounting are in demand.

  1. There are two ways of earning in freelancing.
An active earning. This is earning by working directly with customers. Another passive or indirect income. It is earning by working from various marketplaces.

According to Bangladesh Freelancer Development Society, popular marketplaces in Bangladesh are Upwork, Freelancer.com, FiveR, Guru.com, Toptal, PeoplePerhour etc. To get a job on the marketplace, you have to bid on wages and hours. Employer hires qualified people by looking at salary and portfolio.

Social recognition of work

  1. Although the situation has improved now, people of the country did not have much idea about freelancing even two or three years ago. Many freelancers have heard that 'he wakes up at night, spends the whole day with the computer, whatever he does, it is not a job or something permanent, a girl cannot be married to him'. But now the situation has changed a lot.
  2. However, the social recognition of freelancers' work has increased, but there is still a long way to go. Russell T Ahmed, president of Basis, feels, 'There needs to be a change in freelancing. Now there are more freelancers, but 10 percent earn better. In fact, one must be proficient in specific areas of information technology. In order to become a freelancer, one needs to be skilled in communication as well as in specific subjects.

Freelancer Touhidur feels that despite the increase in initiative, personal income, there is no benefit of good quality training.

Abul Kashem, Managing Director of Chittagong outsourcing company Exponent said, 'We should have gone further. Freelancers do not get any guidance from the country's ICT industry. We do not get guidance on what subjects will be in demand in the future or what to be skilled in.'

Abul Kashem said, 'India is a very big market. Even in Pakistan a freelancer earns 1 lakh dollars a year. We would be happy if any of us had an annual income of 10,000 dollars. Freelancers need expert opinion and guidance from the ICT industry sector.'

He also performed social responsibilities

  1. One thing is noticeable in the work of freelancers. When he started alone and became successful, he involved the youth of the neighborhood in this work. Make their way of income.

Subir Nakarek, a Garo youth from Madhupur upazila of Tangail, became successful by freelancing from that forest area. He then established an IT institute and taught the nearby Garo youth. About 50,000 youth from all ethnic groups have been introduced to freelancing.

  • Again, Minhaj of Sherpur, who has a degree from Qaumi Madrasa, successfully taught freelancing to 700 students of the Madrasa. Shubo Sarkar of Dhaka started freelancing after learning three-dimensional graphics and animation to save his cancer-stricken father. Now his father is healthy and he is a successful freelancer.
