Phrasal verbs with Go

Most Common Phrasal Verbs in English with Go 

1. Go on 

Meaning 1: to happen or take place

Example: Guys, what's going on here? 

Meaning 2: to continue

Example: Let him go on with what he's doing. 

Meaning 3: to encourage someone to say or do something

Example: Please go on. Tell me what you said then. 


2. Go through

Meaning 1: to experience an unpleasant or difficult situation

Example: No one knows what we have gone through. 

Meaning 2: to search through something

Example: I have gone through these documents, but I haven't found the piece of information I was looking for. 


3. Go over 

Meaning 1: to look at something for some mistake

Example: Make sure you go over your article before you give it to me. 

Meaning 2: to be received in a certain way 

Example: John's speech went over OK.


4. Go back 

Meaning 1: to return to some place

Example: The palace we visited last year was beautiful. We would like to go back there again. 

Meaning 2: (two persons) to have known each other for long 

Example: John and Sheela go back a long way. 

Meaning 3: to talk about something that took place in the past 

Example: We have to go back a few days to comprehend the ongoing issue. 


5. Go up 

Meaning 1: (price or cost) to increase

Example: The price of onions is going up now in India. 

Meaning 2: ( a building) to be built

Example: Our new building whose construction suddenly stopped last year is now going up. 


6. Go down 

Meaning 1: (a ship) to sink 

Example: The RMS Titanic went down in 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. 

Meaning 2: (price or cost) to decrease

Example: The cost of everything that is in excess goes down. 


7. Go in 

Meaning 1: to enter a place

Example: I saw John through the window, but I didn't go in. 

Meaning 2: to be understood by someone

Example: No matter how easily you tell him, it never goes in. 


8. Go off 

Meaning 1: ( a light or machine) to stop working

Example: The lights in my hostel went off last night because of the storm. 

Meaning 2: to go somewhere else by leaving a place

Example: John took leave and went off on holiday with his wife yesterday. 


9. Go along 

Meaning 1: to express agreement

Example: No matter what you do, John's never going to go along with your decision. 

Meaning 2: to progress

Example: The project is going along very well. 

Meaning 3: to go to a place with someone without planning

Example: I asked to go along with my parents when they were going to the exhibition. 


10. Go round

Meaning 1: to be sufficient for everyone

Example: Is there enough rice to go round? 

Meaning 2: to rotate like a wheel

Example: The Earth takes approximately 365 days to go round the Sun. 


11. Go out 

Meaning 1: To go somewhere else by leaving a place

Example: John, close the door and inform mom when you go out. 

Meaning 2: (lights) to stop working or producing light

Example: I'm sure light will go out because it's going to rain in an hour or so. 


12. Go away

Meaning 1: to leave a place

Example: They're going away from our house tonight. 

Meaning 2: to disappear

Example: You've hurt your leg very badly. I think the pain will not go away till next week. 


13. Go about

Meaning 1: to start doing something

Example: What's the proper way of going about this task? 

Meaning 2: to spread among people

Example: If the news of your stealing money goes about, you will be fired from your job.  


14. Go after

Meaning 1: to follow someone or something

Example: I saw a police officer go after a thief on the road yesterday. 

Meaning 2: to try to get something

Example: John is going after a B.A. English degree.  


15. Go ahead

Meaning 1: ( event ) to take place or happen 

Example: The event is going ahead as per the schedule. 

Meaning 2: to give permission to do something

Example: Person A: Can I ask you a question?

Person B: Sure, go ahead. 


16. Go by 

Meaning 1: to follow some rule 

Example: We all have to go by the rules of the country. 

Meaning 2: (time) to pass 

Example: One day has gone by after the agreement. 

Meaning 3: to be called by some specific name 

Example: John goes by the name of Chota Bhai in our area. 


17. Go for 

Meaning 1: to choose something

Example: After thinking a lot, he went for English literature. 

Meaning 2: to attack someone suddenly

Example: John suddenly lost his temper and went for me. 

Meaning 3: to like someone

Example: What sort of girls do you go for? 

Meaning 4: to attain or achieve something

Example: The Indian team will certainly go for the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games this year. 


18. Go across

Meaning: to cross some bridge, land or river

Example: It took us 1 hour to go across the bridge. 


19. Go against

Meaning 1: to oppose something

Example: What we're saying doesn't go against the government. 

Meaning 2: (something) to not be good for someone

Example: Everything was going against me, but I didn't give up hope. 


20. Go forward

Meaning 1: to take place or happen

Example: The match is expected to go forward next week. 

Meaning 2: to proceed

Example: They didn't want to go forward without permission.
