Edward Snowden, the country's former intelligence contractor who leaked US secrets, has sworn allegiance to Russia and received a Russian passport.
The Russian state news agency TASS reported this.
Snowden revealed the US National Security Agency's (NSA) secret surveillance.
His lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told the press that he had received a passport and had sworn allegiance to Russia. Khabar Arab News, Deutsche Welle and Taser.
Snowden, 39, did not respond to a request for comment on the news.
Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Snowden Russian citizenship in September.
Snowden fled the US after leaking secret files detailing extensive covert activities by the US and its allies.
