Father's day celebration: Definition & History in English
Lesson 25
Father's Day
Father's Day (Learn also about Mother's Day) is celebrated by children on the third Sunday of June every year, in order to appreciate all the efforts made by their fathers throughout their entire lives.
Origin of Father's Day
In the United States, Sonora Smart Dodd hit on the idea of celebrating Father's Day in 1909, because she, alongwith her five siblings was raised by her father who was a Civil War veteran.
The first Father's Day was observed on June 19 in 1910, which was the birthday of Dodd's father. Since then, the celebration of Father's Day, having been supported by many renowned personalities, got off the ground.
Activities on Father's Day
People buy special gifts and flowers and give them to their fathers in order to show that they take care of them. They make their fathers feel special on this day. They express that they are fortunate to have them in their lives.
Role of a Father
Fathers are the ones who are always ready to go through fire and water for supporting their families, protecting their children from dangers, and providing them with food.
Fathers stand as the pillars of the family on whom the entire family is dependent. They act as a lighthouse for all the family members in the right direction. They play a vital role in the family. They are the ones who wear the pants in the family, and the whole family accepts the decisions made by them. No matter how poverty-stricken fathers are, they always make an onerous effort to educate their siblings well.
Conclusion
It's a fact that our fathers sacrifice their dreams and comforts, and dedicate their lives to the family. So we must respect and look after our fathers and appreciate their efforts for the family, not only on Father's Day but also every single day of the year.
